SMITHFIELD -- More than 50 youth athletes from North Carolina and Virginia will compete Saturday in the Hog Wild Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in the Smithfield Aquatics and Recreation Center.
The all-day tourney begins at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free. The recreation center is at 600 E. Booker Dairy Road.
A Triangle youth team, Junior Thunder, and the nonprofit Bridge II Sports are hosting the tournament. The other teams are the Charlotte Bobcats and Sportable Lazy Legs of Richmond, Va.
Wheelchair basketball is played internationally and is an official event in the Paralympics. Junior Thunder is a member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, the youth division of the national group.
It is the second NWBA Junior Division tournament that the Junior Thunder team has hosted. It held the tourney a year ago, also in Smithfield and in conjunction with the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department.
