GiGe - Girls Inspired Girls Empowered LogoGiGe is a program of Bridge II Sports designed not only for girls with disabilities, but any female involved in the life of a girl with a disability. This includes mothers, grandmothers, sisters, friends, caregivers, etc. GiGe aims to build girls self confidence so they can discover who they are as a person. Activities include “What Not to Wear in a Chair”, hairstyle advice, game nights, movie nights, sex education, couples advice, cross disability education, and more. GiGe has also had Paralympians come and talk at some events. GiGe started because of funding through a Nike Grant. There is no age limit for this program. GiGe also emphasizes physical activity and 90% of the girls in the program are also involved in another sport with Bridge II Sports.

Through My Eyes - 2012 GiGe Events Girl Taking Pictures

Save the Dates for 2012!
June 9, and September 15

The GiGe committee is planning four Saturday events over the coming year, including March 24, June 9, and September 15. The overall theme of the events, “Through My Eyes,” was decided upon because the committee wanted to give the girls a creative way to find their voice and share that voice through photography and journaling. The events will be held at the Snow Building in downtown Durham (331 West Main St., basement level).

During the first event on March 24th, the girls took pictures in the community and chose one to use at the next GiGe day. One June 9th, the girls will learn how to keep a journal and how to express themselves by using a journal. In the third event they will get to frame their photo as well as do a write up as to what the photo means to them. In the final event we will display the girls’ work out in the community and have an open house for all to come and enjoy!

Who knows, maybe we will inspire a new hobby or career in the process!
