Valor Games SE 2023 Volunteer FAQ

Due to COVID-19 and evolving local, state, and national guidelines/restrictions answers to some of the questions below may change. We will work to make sure you are kept updated on the latest developments.

When is Valor Games Southeast 2023?

In 2023 instead of 1 three-day event, Bridge II Sports is hosting 3 Valor Games SE events.

  • May Event – 3 Days of Competition
    • May 22nd: Athlete Check-in and Opening Ceremony
    • May 23rd: Day 1 at UNC at Chapel Hill – Sitting Volleyball, Boccia, Air Rifle
    • May 24th: Day 2 at Duke University – Powerlifting, Wheelchair Basketball, Indoor Rowing, Table Tennis
    • May 25th: Day 3 at Lake Crabtree County Park – Kayaking, Cycling, Archery
  • August 6th –  DK3 3-n-3 Wheelchair Basketball Tournament; Rocky Mount, NC
    • August 5th: Athlete Check-In
    • August 6th: Tournament
  • August 22nd – 9-hole Scramble Golf Tournament; Hillandale Golf Course, Durham, NC
    • August 21st: Athlete Check-in
    • August 22nd: Tournament

How do I sign up to volunteer for Valor Games SE 2023?

What are the requirements to volunteer at Valor Games SE 2023?

Volunteers at Valor Games SE 2023 must:

-Be 18 years or older

-Attend a mandatory virtual training session prior to the games

-Review and sign a Bridge II Sports/Move United Insurance Liability Waiver

What types of ‘jobs’ will I do as a volunteer at VGSE23?

Join us in making VGSE the best possible event it can be for our Veterans with disabilities. We can’t do it without an army of volunteers helping out in every possible way.

Some volunteer roles include:
athlete registration
venue set up
assisting with a specific sport – helping with equipment, assisting sport leads to keep competition running smoothly, keeping scores
serving meals
directing athletes to competitions
volunteer-check in

When are the mandatory volunteer trainings?

Prior to the games all volunteers must participate in ONE virtual volunteer training sessions. This training covers the basics of Valor Games SE, volunteer expectations, insights into working with Veterans with disabilties including Traumautic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Disorder, and safety guidelines.

Trainings for the May Event will take place on:
Monday, April 17th 3-4:30
Monday, April 17th 5-6:30
Friday, April 21st (TBD)

Training will last approximately one hour and a half. The WebEx link for trainings will be sent directly to registered volunteers via events@bridge2sports.org or martinh@bridge2sports.org

What do I wear to volunteer at VGSE23?

Great question!

All VGSE22 Volunteers MUST wear their official VGSE23 VOLUNTEER SHIRT.
(Everyone at VGSE23 will be wearing specific shirts to designate their roles and make it easy for all of us to tell who is who and who should be there and who shouldn’t)

Volunteers can pick up shirts on MONDAY MAY 22 between 2pm and 6pm at:
DoubleTree Hotel RDU at RTP
4810 Page Creek Lane
Durham, NC

All volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes (sneakers are ideal) and comfortable, appropriate pants or shorts (no short shorts please)
Your day at Valor Games SE 2023 will be an active one! Make sure to check the weather prior to the day and dress accordingly.

I am volunteering at Registration Day on 5/22- where do I park and check in for my shift?

All registration activities will take place in the Ballroom area and adjoining rooms at:
DoubleTree RDU at RTP
4810 Page Creek Lane
Durham

Feel free to park anywhere at the DoubleTree.

Come to the Ballroom area – it is in the middle of the hotel near the pool area whether you come in through the front door or back door.

I am volunteering at Duke on 5/23 for set up- where do I park and check in for my shift?

Volunteers can park in the Science Drive Lot

It is a short walk over to Cameron Indoor Stadium.  A registration table will be set up outside the north side of the stadium.

Volunteers can park in the Science Drive Lot

Volunteers that require accessible parking can park in the Whitford Parking Lot

It is a short walk over to Cameron Indoor Stadium.  A registration table will be set up inside the south side of the stadium where you can pick up your credentials.

I am volunteering at Lake Crabtree on 5/25- where do I park and check in for my shift?

Thanks for helping make Competition Day at Lake Crabtree County Park a great one for our Veteran athletes on Thursday May 26th!

Volunteers will park in the White Oak Lot — it is the 4th lot on the right once you are in the park.  There will be signage pointing the way.

Volunteers that require accessible parking can park in the Boat Rental Lot – the third lot in the park on the right.

Volunteer check-in will be in the big tent in the Boat Rental Lot near the kayak dock.

As a reminder – ALL volunteers need to be in the park by 7am and will be unable to leave until early afternoon due to closure of the main road for the cycling race.
