Sled Hockey
Our partners at Hurricanes Sled Hockey have been leading the charge for sled hockey in the Triangle for almost 10 years. They have some great offerings and share Bridge2Sports’ desire that adaptive sports unites families and communities to play together and learn from one another. According to HSH’s website:
Hurricanes Sled Hockey was created with the purpose of serving our community and enriching the lives of physically disabled individuals (and their families) of all ages and backgrounds, by providing them the opportunity to play adaptive ice hockey. We believe that hockey is for EVERYONE, so our focus is to break down the barriers, blur the lines, and make hockey accessible to ALL who want to play.
HSH practices are held most Saturdays at Polar Ice Raleigh from October to June. If you would like to be involved, reach out to their team at hurricanessledhockey@gmail.com or over social media! In order to ensure they have the proper equipment ready for you to hit the ice on day one, please reach out a couple of days in advance of your first practice so that they can prepare for you!
We hope to see you there!
Quick Summary
-
Sled Hockey is for youth and adults with a wide range of disabilities. Like its ice hockey counterpart, sled hockey is played on a regulation hockey rink with the same number of players and the same nets, but using sleds rather than skates. Picks on the end of two short hockey sticks allow you to propel across the ice, change direction, and manipulate the puck. This fast-paced game is open to all skill levels and competes across the country in three different divisions.
-
Sled hockey is for anyone who would like to give it a try. On the youth team, there are sleds available that can be pushed by a skater behind so that even without the arm strength to propel yourself, you can still get out there and be a part of the action! For the adult team, you must be able to propel your own sled in order to participate in the competitions. If you are unsure if you will be able to propel the sled, reach out to the sled hockey team and they can walk you through your options!

Hurricanes Sled Hockey meets at Polar Ice Raleigh (2601 N Raleigh Blvd, Raleigh, NC 27604) on Saturdays from 9:30am - 10:30am between October and May. For specific dates, see their website here
-
As with all Bridge2Sports programs, you are welcome to try out sled hockey for a couple of practices for free before committing financially to the program. To join the team for competitions, you must have an active USA Hockey membership and a Hurricanes Sled Hockey membership, which usually sums to about $300 for the season. If this cost is prohibitive, please let HSH and B2S know and we would be happy to work with you to allow you to play!
-
You do not need any of your own equipment to participate. HSH has all necessary equipment for you to play, including sleds, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, helmets, and sticks.
