Adapted Cycling
Adaptive Cycling is designed to empower athletes of all abilities to experience the freedom, connection, and joy of riding. Through specialized equipment and individualized support, we make it possible for each participant to ride in a way that meets their unique needs and goals. Our fleet includes tandem bikes for athletes who are blind or have low vision (paired with a trained volunteer pilot), recumbent bikes and trikes for riders who benefit from additional stability and comfort, and handcycles for individuals with limited or no use of their legs, allowing them to propel the cycle using their upper body.
The program is built around strong volunteer support, creating a safe, welcoming, and community-focused environment. Volunteers serve in key roles—piloting tandems, riding alongside participants to provide assistance at crossings, helping with minor equipment adjustments, and offering encouragement throughout each ride. Whether someone is looking to improve their fitness, work toward personal performance goals, or simply enjoy time outdoors with others, the program is designed to support a wide range of experience levels in an inclusive and social setting.

Schedule & Locations
Adaptive Cycling meets every other Saturday morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Sessions rotate between two of the Triangle’s premier greenway systems—the American Tobacco Trail in Durham and the Neuse River Greenway in Raleigh—both of which offer smooth, accessible paths ideal for adaptive cycling.
Each ride is structured yet flexible, allowing participants to move at their own pace. Some riders focus on building endurance or improving speed, while others enjoy a more relaxed, social experience. No matter the goal, each session emphasizes safety, support, and connection, creating a positive and rewarding environment for everyone involved.
