“I do solemnly swear…”

Bridge II Sports was honored to host the Swearing-In Ceremony for new North Carolina State Representative Kanika Brown on our campus. Led by Dr. Marcus Barr, Ms. Brown took the oath of office in her signature cowboy hat surrounded by athletes with disabilities and community supporters.

woman, Kanika Brown, in white cowboy had stands with right hand raised and left hand on bible. She is encircled by several people some standing and some in wheelchairs. On either side of Ms. Brown are the United States and North Carolina flags.

“When we were asked to accommodate her swearing-in, we were deeply moved. It signals to us and to the population we serve, her alignment with our mission. Kanika will be another active voice in the State House to help move us towards fulfilling the Bridge II Sports Vision.” said David Smith, BIIS Director of Programs.

Prior to starting at Bridge II Sports, David managed a Community Center in Winston-Salem’s Southeast Ward. While there, Kanika Brown, a prominent community leader in Winston-Salem provided David invaluable support in revitalizing a historically neglected facility. When Ms. Brown heard about David’s new position she immediately felt moved by the mission of Bridge II Sports – especially the EveryBODYPlaysNC school initiative. As a firm believer in equal access for all and her strong commitment to serve as an advocate for marginalized groups, she is eager to make her voice heard on the state level to create change for people with disabilities.

A big thank you to State Representative Brown for making us a part of a very important moment in her life and career. Looking forward to visiting her new office at the NC State Capitol in Raleigh!
